broken 1990 240 odometer 200 1990

I'd be skeptical about the gear. I had a speedo shop work on mine originally, and they replaced the circuit board, motor, etc... after 6,500 miles later (and 2 instances of it breaking), I brought it back the third time asking for my money back. I still have the small gear that they replaced, although it appears in tact, the blasted thing would only work for 0.5 mile after I reseat it. I was given an original Volvo gear and the thing worked for 100 miles then broke after stripping two teeth; most likely due to its age.

There are two wires that run from the circuit board (blue & black, I believe) to behind the speedohead's faceplate. Make sure that they are not disconnected. I -assume- that these wires provide power & ground to the board that drives the motor. Furthermore, check around the clear part that the small tooth gear travels around, perhaps something is stuck in one (or more) of the grooves.

Definitely try another gear. I ordered a gear from Jeff Caplan for $29 (shipped). He actually makes these things. I installed his gear this afternoon and 10 miles later, so far so good. You may want to check out Jeff's site at http://members.ispwest.com/jkcaplan/gearwebpage/gear.html. If you order a gear, tell him that Eric sent you. :-) :-)

Finally, if you can find another speedohead, try it with a good gear that doesn't have any missing teeth. If the thing works for you for 2 miles (or any distance) and then quits, I would -highly- suspect the gear itself.

If you have any questions, let me know, I've taken apart my cluster probably 10-15 times within the past couple of weeks trying to fix my odometer. Hopefully today was the last. Happy Holidays!
