B20 Overhaul 1800 1971

I've gotten around to rebuilding my girlfriends 1800 and have a few questions:
1 I've got 2 broken rings #1 ring on cyl 3 & 4 How common or uncommon is this? rod and crank bearings look suprisingly good for the 150K+ on the motor.
2 What tricks are there to know about these engines when rebuilding?
3 Can anyone recommend a good machine shop for the boring, balancing and head work in the Southern California (Orange County)aera?
Thanks for all the intresting reading and any response,
Kurt
