Junk in the Fresh Air Intake? 700 1988

Can someone tell me how to gat an accumilation of leaves and pine needles out of the fresh air intake (located under the wiper blades on the outside of the car.) I have a 740 which has been sitting a while and it got really crapped up as a result. Is there a way to get to the screen under the vents? I tried with limited success to fish stuff out with a dental tool, but there must be a better way. If not, where will all that stuff end up, and what is the possible damage?! Thanks.
