960 - Switched to synthetic ATF, added cooler, filter - update and thanks 900 1995

Thanks to all who contributed to my many questions about transmission coolers, fluids and filters. I wanted to update you on my success.

I installed a transmission fluid cooler (Tekonsha self-regulating model 4337SR) and a magnefine filter, and put in Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. The car shifts better with the synthetic than with the old oil. The old oil was fairly brown despite a recent transmission service done by my mechanic a couple of months ago. It took 12 quarts to flush the transmission; I did it as indicated in the FAQ.

As suggested by many sources, I installed the oil cooler in series with the OEM cooler in the radiator.

The Tekonsha oil cooler came with fittings that fit the OEM oil cooler in the radiator and metal cooler line so I did not have to cut the metal line. (The threads on the fitting for the metal cooler line were a little tight, but it works.) Another nice thing about the Tekonsha cooler is that it regulates the temperature of the transmission fluid.

Thanks again for your help and I hope that this post is useful to someone else out there who is thinking of installing an oil cooler.

-Steve

PS: I got the Tekonsha cooler part number 4337SR from www.holmanrv.com. They also sell the Magnetic filter but were out of stock. I ended up getting the filter from www.ipdusa.com.
