Sounds more likely to be a loose fanbelt. If your'e not sure how, have someone check and if necessary retention the belt(s), or if you have a manual (Bentley or Haynes) type, check the procedure in there, it's fairly simple. But don't go paying big money to someone for doing it, cos it is a 2 minute job if it is a loose fanbelt. Unless they are family of course !!!!
You usually get a thumping knocking sound when the water pump goes, accompanied by coolant coming out round where the pump is.
