What's the skinny on 240 automatic transmissions? 200

Hi All,

I'm a long time 240 driver, my '84 4-door manual transmission sedan has over 300k on it, and I'm familiar with most anything on the car, inside and out. My mom, however, has an '89 240 sedan with the automatic transmission, and lately it's been making strange noises. I haven't fully diagnosed it yet, but there's a good possibility that the transmission is the source.

It's a sort of siren-like whine, and is definitely related to rear wheel or driveshaft speed, but doesn't sound like it's emanating from the rear of the car. It's a temperature sensitive problem, and seems to happen mostly when the car is cold on cold New England days--say around 20 degrees F, and doesn't show up at all when the temp is in the 40's. The car has about 120k on it.

So, my questions:
In general, how reliable and tough is the automatic?
What are the common failure modes for the automatic?
Is it worthwhile to rebuild the tranny if it dies prematurely, or is it OK to buy a used unit?

What's the typical rebuild cost? What gets replaced--clutches, bands, etc., like in a typical American automatic, or is it a different setup?

Thanks much,

Mike
