1996 960 Flashing Transmission (W-E) Lights 900 1996

My 1996 960 Sedan with 92K suddenly started flashing its transmission range indicator lights inbetween W and E and the overdrive lock out light was flashing on the dash. Other Brickboard posts indicated that the PNP relay may be the problem. I also received input from Bricks Digest users that suggested the problem was intermitent and weather / moisture related. Since the car had recently gone through a heavy rain storm / standing water, I let it sit for a couple of days and then fired it up. The lights were still flashing. Checking the ATF fluid revealed that it was about 1/2 qt low. Topping up the ATF fluid and letting the car warm up real good then seemed to do the trick as the lights suddenly stopped flashing. Could the low ATF fluid level have had any impact, or was the problem just moisture related?
