seat heaters in 960 900

No heat in either seats. Switch lights come on. Heater control on passenger seat hanging loose so I connected it to seat bottom. Does this need special orentiation? What triggers the heater when the seat is occupied? Purchased this used last spring and just got cold enough to take action on it. Any suggestions appreciated.
