firewall plug question 200 1983

Hi all,

Today I isolated the source of my major water leak to a plug in the firewall. The plug is located about an inch diagonally above & to the right of that one drain hose that runs the length of the car and empties out the back. ( i am too tired to remember where that hose comes from, but it originates in the engine compartment and is a yellowish translucent color - it runs under the carpet on the passenger side of the car from engine compartment to the back of car, then pokes out the bottom of the car and presumably transports some liquid out of the car. AC drain hose perhaps?)

anyway, this plug is above & to the right (by about an inch or so) of where that hose passes through the firewall. on my car, the leaky plug is about an 3/4 inch in diameter. I think it is black but the whole plug & the area around it is painted over with white stuff (some sealant maybe?) so I can't tell for sure yet - debating whether to scrape off the white stuff. not quite ready to create a bigger problem though.

essentially, the water is coming in through that plug. the weird thing is that the plug is open on the engine compartment side, as if it used to be a hose of some sort but got cut. I can't see it from the engine compartment (very frustrating), but I can feel it, and i can almost fit the tip of my pinky finger in the "seems like a cut hose" part. the hose-like portion of the plug is about 1/4 inch in diameter, & hollow in the middle like a hose. the portion that protrudes off the firewall toward the front of the car is about 1/4 inch in length or so.

I am perplexed by this one right now. I want to know what is supposed to be there - it doesn't make sense the way it is, and it draws about a cup of h20 a day (oregon rainy season) into the passenger compartment. the white sealant stuff that's covering it complicates the issue and makes me think that someone else knew about the leak and tried to fix it, but did something weird there....

I've tried to explain this as clearly as I can. If you think you know what this is, or what is supposed to be there, please post.

if you have ideas but need more info, post anyway and I will check and add any info I may have left out.

thanks very much,

susan.
