manual tranny fluid...what factors decide?

I was just thinking today about changing the fluid in my manual tranny Trooper and looked up the capacity and type of fluid. This vehicle calls for a 5w30 motor oil in the tranny and the tranfer case. OTOH, my manual Volvos call for auto matic transmission fluid. Anyone have any thoughts as to what determines the appropriate lubricant to use? I'm thinking maybe the type or quality of the metal used in the gears or maybe the types of seals used on the unit itself. Pablos?
