Just Bought 1990 240... problem

You mentioned a little oil leaking from the oil cap. You could have a clogged flame trap. Mine was clogged and leaking from the cap - as well as other places!!!

I'd clean/replace the flame trap in addition to doing everything Chris recommended. A clogged flame trap will cause oil leaks and make the engine feel as if it is "constipated". Is your mileage low? That's another symptom of a clogged flame trap. Ask me how I know this...Also clean up the ground strap from the engine while your at it. One last thing, check the rubber housing from the air filter for cracks/tears etc. From what I understand, any number of things can cause a bad idle. Do remember, however, that 240's have a somewhat lumpy idle anway.
