A/C problems (just kidding, it's another seat heater question) 200 1982

I've got an 82 245 Turbo. There are no switches for the seat heaters. From what I understand they just come on when the thermostat says it's cold enough. Neither heater works and I was thinking of pulling the seats soon and seeing if I can find the infamous wire break near the thermostat. My question is... Are these really just controlled thermostatically? or is there a pressure switch of some type to tell the heater circuit I'm sitting in the seat? I'm not sure I wan't seat heaters working every time it's below 50F in the car, especially if I'm not sitting in the seat.
