thanks for the insight ... it gives me a place to start troubleshooting - i was having difficulty even thinking through what might be going on ... your analysis/suggestions make it much clearer for me thanks

i purchased my long speedo cable from Joe Lazenby at Susquehanna Spares, 3725 Elder Rd, Harrisburg, PA 17111 (717) 921-2644 - i didn't record the part number - it was about 12 inches longer than the one i pulled out
