fried headlight switch ? time to do a relay upgrade ? 200 1982

i work nights, so i use my headlights a lot, but after about 20minutes of driving the switch gets quite warm/hot. the other night after grabbing some dinner @ tim hortins, i start up the car & twist the knob & shaft right out of the headlight switch .. it's fried & come apart. now i have a temp replacement push/pull that's supposed to be good for 75amps. it's hot to the touch by the time i get home from work as well. definately not the thing i expect from a relay, anyone else expierience this ? it's a canadian '82 245 if that helps ...
thanks again =)
