AMM adjustment: Okay now what?? 700 1987

Finally got the resistance dialed down enough to get the LED to flash, but the first time I did it the car stalled out. Next time I dialed it down slower and about 500 ohms the engine started to miss real bad. When the LED on my homemade test probe started to flash the car was missing so bad that it was hard to tell if the flash was even. When I first checked the AMM it was dialed all the way up. Car seemed to be running fine except for a hot re-start problem this summer. What would cause the car to start missing as the mixture was leaned out?
