OIL? Synthetic or regular for older Volvos

I have read the FAQ on oils. Is it better to go with the sythetic (as is recommended in this FAQ) and not change the oil but every 10,000 miles?! I have heard that older vehicles (10+ years or older) should not go to synthetic. The Volvo mechanic in our area said to use 10-30 Havoline. He claims that Havoline does not leave residue. I have two 240's (1983 with 160K and 1990 with 122K), but they are both new to me. What are the opinions and experience with Volvos and oil out there?

Thanks!
