OverDrive installation this weekend... Do I need to do stuff?

I pulled the drain plug to find metal shavings--- It seems to turn by hand in all the gears (at least the ones I could engage with a screwdriver stuck into the hole in the short-shifter extention). Is there a chance that these shavings aren't necessarily a death sentence? Perhaps they're evidence of normal wear and I can clean them off and put it in? (Oh please oh please oh please...)
