I usually have to push the pistons in several times and quickly get the pad inserted with shims. So yes it can be a little difficult. If the boots are exposing the sides of the piston and fluid leak is evident then a rebuild kit would have new boots. Best to get new calipers- probably not worth the rebuild by qualified mechanics and not worth the safety risk if you don't know how. Be sure to use sil-glyde or permatex green brake grease and apply to the piston contact suface, back side of pad, pad edges, and retatiner pins.
