Found fault code 1-4-4. Need help with interpretation

Thanks to posters for advice on check engine light. I went ahead and followed diagnostic process and came up with a 1-4-4 code, which Bentley says "Load signal missing from LH control unit. Control unit assumes the engine is at full load." Does this mean the LH control unit is shot, or is there anything I could pin my hopes on first (e.g., loose connection, bad ground, etc.)? Can I drive my car in this condition or am I asking for big trouble? I need to take a trip tomorrow but could take another vehicle if necessary. Many thanks again for the excellent advice.
Mike F.
