Engine Noise and Over-drive slipping 700 1989

1.) My 780 4-cylinder has a developed the habit of slipping into overdrive for no particular reason. How involved is the repair and am I doing any damage by driving it in this gear at 65mph? (I mostly drive freeways.)

2.) After geting (unrightfully) towed last week, I noticed a rumbling/low roar under my hood when I accelerate. It's nearly time for a new timing belt...is this related to the tow? Timing belt? Any other ideas?

I'll take it to my mechaic after the holidays, but don't want to damage it in any way before then.

Thanks,
Gabby
