Info That Maybe Helpful ...We Learnt the Hard Way !

Yesterday Ian B and I waved goodbye to an '88 740 we had been working on for a friend.

When we purchased it, it had trashed interior plastics and door skins,a fuse box that had been rearranged, a burnt 16 fuse and missing relays, bonnet that had to be taken back to bare metal, broken window regulator, non functioning pre pump, leaking heater core etc, etc. It was destined for the wrecking yard!

In all we spent over 200 hours. Time well spent on a car with a sweet transmission and engine. It had only travelled 175000kms and they were probably to be its last. It now has a proud and very happy new owner.

Tips.

If following the 700/900FAQS to do a transmission flush and you intend to disconnect at the radiator, the return line from the transmission is NOT the top line as stated in FAQS. However the top line is the easiest to access. You will need to attach your draining hose to the radiator itself and not the tube.

If installing a pre pump it is very easy to incorrectly place the wires that attach directly to the pump. The AC pump we used had the smallest +,- indicators possible. Getting it right is critical. We couldn't see mention of this in the FAQS.

Our mistakes were annoying as we were pressed for time. Hope this saves someone.

Greetings for the festive season to all who have given this unique community so much integrity.

Take care,
John H from Downunder
