Fuel pump? 700

Hi,

Volvo 740, 2.0 Manual. Engine doesn't like to pull away in 1st gear when the car is run for more than an hour, then the engine starts making a horrible hammering noise like it wants to commit suicide, but only when moving away in 1st!

Problem is worse when the fuel tank is empty, and today when I was driving I filled her up with petrol, and it really made a big difference. The engine pulled away smoothly in 1st gear straight after filling up and the engine seemed to drive smoother too.

Also, I seem to get same symptoms when reversing with full steering lock on.

Does this mean I have a fuel pump problem?

Any advice would be great.

Peter.
