Ambient temp gauge question, doesn't work right. 200

Over the holiday, i finished installing my ambient temp gauge. I wired it up using the instructions found on the homstead.com links.

However, it simply maxes out on the gauge when I turn the car on. It says its over 40 degrees C when its actually about 10 degrees C. Am I suppose to plug it into a 8amp or 16amp circut. I tried #12 (8amp) on my 1988 244. it lit up but didn't read, so I tried #13 (16amp) and just went to the max.

I have grounded the sender and the gauge like the instructions say. What else am I doing wrong??? Is the gauge broke? The sender is brand new, it's a VDO.

Thanks for any help in advance,
Chuck
