OK...I didn't comment on your first posting. Figured it was covered well...
But now, you've got me scared a bit. The aluminum backing for the dash. Hmmm...might be possible, but...not easy, and it won't fit right. Perhaps finding a thin real wood veneer would be easier. Either way, you would have to remove ALL the guages and switches. Don't mess with the guages though. the later ones work. The deco looking older style look neat, but they don't work very well...at least not for long. It would also be a HUGE pain to change them. You would probably have to change a bunch of sending units too, not to mention the wiring connectors and.... and.... etc.
Steering wheel.... don't start looking for new ones yet. The wheel in the 1800e is a wonderful 3 spoke unit. I've been sitting on one for years, and I'm going to install it in my 140 wagon because I like it so much. Try it before you decide to replace it, and call me first if you do replace it. I wouldn't mind having another.
I am somewhat familiar with the 1800 you are getting, and I assure you it is a fine car the way it is. She is amongst the best (if not the best) driving 1800 that I've ever experienced. You would do very well to...try it on, if you will...for several months and become familiar with it before you start doing (or even thinking of) any modifications. It already has all the practical modifications one could ever ask for...
Also, anything you think of doing to the dash can and will get very technical very quickly. Best to practice with easier projects first...
