Stereo questions 760 700 1986

1976 760. sedan...I took out the old radio, found the factory supplied amp and took that out. Replaced with high end Pioneer reciever, 5 1/4 front and 6 1/2 rear...sounds terrible...All mid range, muddy...very dissapointed. Did I miss something? are there crossovers somewhere? Do I need to run all new wiring to the speakers? I could swear that I used the correct wires going to the external amp that I tore out... I don't have a radio place in my neighborhood to consult with ...
