On going bad idle with my brick. 200 1983

Hello All,

I have a 1983 240 Wagon with a Stromberg Carburator. I have really bad idle since I bought the car 30,000 kms ago. I've tried two sets of plugs, two sets of wires, replaced the points with an electronic unit out of a later model, rebuild the carburator (original) tried a lower mileage carburator...and still persistantly bad idle.

I had my mechanic check the timing and it is spot on. I've done a compression check and it seems to be within spec. The car runs extremely rich and playing with the idle mixture seems to always make it run worse.

Is this a known problem? I heard the 240's are prone to intake gaskets is this true? Would this cause the problem i'm having? Do I need to clean something up?

HELP!

Chris
