Problems with 240 (when cold, intermittent dieing and irregular idle speed) check engine lt. on

I recently started the car and the engine surged then dropped then surged again. When i came to a stop acouple blocks from my house the car died.
When I got to work the car smelled of coolant. I then popped the hood and found that the h20 pump was leaking from the center seal. I thought to myself, how could these be related?
It was time to do the timing belt and tensioner, so i buught the kit and h2o pump. i installed allthe parts and also put in new oil\filter and plugs and wires. the car runs great and
made it with no problems on a 170 mile trip. When I got back home the next morning i drove it to work, the car did the same thing (surging and dieing) and then on the way home the
(after i stopped at the store) the check engine light came on.
any help would be great.
Thanks
P. Husing
