rough idle on '90 740 gl 700 1990

i have a '90 740 gl wagon with 172k, and about 500 miles ago it began to idle roughly. It seems as if it is going to die, and then it givies itself too much throttle, bringing the idle rpm birifely upto about 1200rpm, versus the "normal" ~750rpm, then back down to 750rpm. It then continues to fluctuate like this until throttle is applied. i have checked all of the vacuum leaks, cleaned the distributor, and replaced the intake manifold gasket already. any suggestions?
