Replacing Distributor Rotor 200 1986

I am trying to replace the distributor rotor in my 86 240. The new one looks identical to the old one. The old one comes out easy, but I am having difficulty putting the new one in, it seems to bind, and will not get on. The old one went back on no problem. I know this is a simple question, but I do not want to screw this up, can someone please help me. Could it be a defective part?
Thanks and happy holidays.
