My dad and I are currently trying to replace the AW-70 transmission on my '82 sedan with a used one, and we have run into some problems trying to get the "new" one on. We have it almost mated to the engine, with a little less than an inch of space between the bellhousing and the engine, but we can't get it to go any farther. It is worth noting that we left the old toruqe converter on the engine as we couldn't see how to get it off (the haynes book says to get at the bolts that hold it on through the starter hole, but we can't see how to do this. Any tricks?). Is it essential to take the torque converter off with the old transmission and then attatch it to the new transmission before trying to mate the transmission with the engine? As we have it, the torque converter is still attached to the engine, and we are trying to get the input shaft on the transmission to line up with it. We have several of the bellhousing bolts started, and have tried to tighten them to apply pressure while we turn the crankshaft to make everything line up and come together. This hasn't worked yet, and we have come to a point where we can't turn the crankshaft anymore because two metal parts seem to be butting against each other (we can back it up, then hear a "clank" when we try to turn it forward again. Any ideas on what could be causing this, and on how we can get the ole beast back together? Thanks a lot.
