automatic transmission doesn't engage promptly 200 1985

1985 240 DL Series, auto transmission - at first it was slow slipping into first gear when cold, say, within the first five minutes of operation there would be a five lag when taking off from a stop sign. It has gotten progressively worse and now might "slip" or "stall" in neutral as much as ten minutes after start-up, or take longer to engage when still cold. I hope it is just an adjustment I can make (initially I thought it might be a vacuum leak - there is a "clunk" and a lurch into gear if I give it a little fuel to get it to engage) and not something extensive that will eventually leave me by the side of the road. Thanks! - Rob
