Question about headlight assemblies... 200 1986

Alright... today I took apart the spare headlight assemblies that I am going to refinish, and pried the lens away from the mirror. I noticed a couple of things when I was cleaning the lens that I thought I should ask about (no mention in the repair manual). First, on the bottom near where the grill would be, there were two blackend areas that looked like a piece of paper had been charred on. I took those off with a razor. Is it common to see charr marks on the headlight lens? Then, I noticed that when removing some of the glue on the lens that there was a rubbery seal that was stuck in the lens, and also in the mirrord part. It looks to me like its another addition to the plastic backing to hold the lens in place, yet most of it peals off with the glue... should I try and leave that in there or clean it right out down to the hard plastic?

On the side... I shouldn't try to clean the mirror?
