Where is temp sender unit for dash temp gauge? 900 1994

My wife's '94 965 has the dash temp gauge intermittently cutting out and going back on with a somewhat random period on the order of minutes.

I figure that the best approach to trouble-shooting this is to locate the temp sending unit, which I presume is somewhere on the engine and sensing the coolant temperature, and look for a bad connector/connection.

Where is this unit located?

Any other suggestions on locating the source of this problem are also welcome and appreciated.
