Center Console HELP PLEASE 200 1989

I am the proud and excited new owner of a 1989 240DL Sedan, but being the green brick owner I need some help please.
In the center emergency brake console there is a square or rectangular big open hole. It is a few inches by a few inches, and I can not figure out what was orginally there. When I took my brick in to my local dealer for a checkup, I was told that 2 cup holders go there. How can this be? I checked out the other postings regarding www.husco.com, but since I am missing the owners manual I can't figure out what was originally in this opening. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
