Performance mod ideas 200

Cheaper than $100? Nah. Save your money and put it towards something worthwhile.

A performance coil and wire set won't get you much. If you're insistant on spending the money now, make sure all the "tune-up" bits are good. Get some Bougicord wires (I like the ones with the metal boots, not the plastic ones), NGK spark plugs (BPR6ES for an NA motor, BPR7ES for the turbos), Bosch cap and rotor, Mann or Volvo air filter (yeah, ditch the K&N), clean out the PCV system. And then, when it's running at its peak..

Go save the rest of the money. Invest in IPD sway bars and bushings, a nice cam, eventually a custom EFI setup to take advantage of the new cam and exhaust, maybe some higher compression pistions eventually.

The exhaust setup was mandrel bent, right? If not.. save up for a decent mandrel bent seutp.

The IPD bars are $$$, but a cheap (and probably well under $100) alternative (until you can afford the IPD bars) would be to raid a junk yard. Get the bars off of a turbo (sedan). You'd still want the bushings new.

Same with the cam. The Unitek cam is $$$ (about $200 shipped from Sweden I believe). But IPD sells a VX or VX3 cam and so does MVP (www.mvpvolvo.com, excuse the horrid excuse for a web site, they apparently know their Volvos)... either might be cheaper. Cheaper still would be to find an early 80s Canadian spec 240 with a B23E engine in a junk yard. This will have a K or H grind Volvo cam. This is good for about 15-25 hp, but may not smog.. and may result in a real rough idle.

Want more power? Go back to Unitek and get one of their head jobbers. They've got the know-how and apparently offer worked up heads with cams for a pretty fair price. Want it cheaper? No such luck really. Other (non US/Canada) markets got a later casting of the red block's head that apparently was good for a few extra ponies by itself.
