Hot start Procedure 120-130

Ron, It appears that you have your hot-start situation wired without special wiring, and hopefully your method works for most everyone. You're referring to a technique for SU's, right?

As for B18 -era ignition system modifications not being necessary, surely that is true for an OE system and engine that suffers from no deteriorated connections and components. But as evidenced by the fuse box fix and other electrical system remedies you're up on, multiple impairments do accumulate that eat away at the margins of adequacy that the original design provided. I got acquainted with disappearing adequacy of ignition and starting in a 6v VW as it aged, and refit lots of tarnished wiring connectors, etc. I even measured the voltage drop in each fitting, before and after. JohnMc wrote of installing an 8v battery in his VW to overcome all of it in one change.

Modern ignition components offer much greater margins of adequacy in OE terms, plus benefits beyond those originally possible, such as wider spark plug gap and more amperage (heat) in the spark, both of which light leaner mixtures better, such as may occur in hot starts, or with worn carbs, or non-optimal needles or jetting or choke setting.

While willingness to make mods and upgrades is a personal philosophy matter, few of us would insist on using bias-ply tires like originally fitted, or pre-halogen headlights. Other mods may not be "necessary" to merely get by, but still desirable in several significant ways. On the other hand, I keep plenty of money in the bank-- not being broke, I don't have to fix myself.

Best Regards, C.G.
