Generator life expectancy? 700 1988

Generator life expectancy? What sort of life expectancy from my generator can I expect on my 740gl 1988? It is original and the car has done 220,000 Km about 140 000 miles.
Should I have a reserve one in the car just in case? I could buy one from a scrap yard. Or buy a second hand one and have my one renovated? Is it a thing that just fails without warning leaving me in the middle of nowhere?
Any ideas?
