765 Turbo - Won't pick up all it's fuel 700

Helped my cousin pick up his new 765ti today. About half way home the car died, like it had run out of fuel. The PO had told us that the gauge was flaky, that it would move slowly down to an indicated 1/2 tank and then drop like a rock to 1/4 of a tank whereupon it would run out of fuel if not filled immediatly. Cuz fueled up the car (he did not top off the tank) and we took off for home. About an hour later he pulled to the side of the freeway, seemingly out of gas. After borrowing a gas can and dumping in a couple of gallons it started right up and we took it back to the gas station to fill it up again. It would only take 10 gallons. It seems that the fuel pump will not pick up the last 4 or 5 gallons in the tank. Both pumps seem to be running ok. Any ideas?
