Safety of 940 vs. 960 900 1997

My dad's considering dumping our 960 in favor of a more reliable and easier to work on 940. While we were talking about it, a question came up: which one's safer? Obviously the 960 has the side impact bags, but besides that are there any major differences between a 1997 964 and, say, a 1994 944? The only thing I thought of was that there is more room in the engine bay in a 940. Anybody have any experiences, stories, facts? Thanks in advance.

-Greg
