Fuel gauge shows empty though tank(s) are full 700 1984

My fuel gauge shows zero though the tank(s) are full.
I have a 1984 760GLE V6 with (I think) the auxilliary tank set-up. It seems to have two fuel senders.

I checked the fuel gauge by temporarily installing a 500ohm variable resistor to the grey/white wire from the tank(s) to the gauge. The gauge works fine and moves when I vary the resistance so I suspect that one (or both) of the senders is faulty. I have cleaned the earth connection near the tanks.
I think its unlikely that both senders would become faulty at the same time and so I presume that one has gone to earth.
Can anyone tell me how these two senders are connected? Do they just average each other? If one is faulty I'm wondering if I can just disconnect one and continue to use just the other.

Thanks in advance for all the great advice I have been getting off the brickboard recently!

Having great fun bringing this car up to standard.
