Replacing a b234 with a b230 NA?? 700

Some time ago, there was some discussion about replacing a dead b234 (16 valve) in a '91 745 with a non-turbo b230. I think I remember the conclusion of the discussion was that doing this was a bad idea due to some gearing differences in cars which came with the b234? Can someone tell me again why replacing a 16 valve with a "normal" b230 is not the thing to do? Short of a v-8 conversion, what are other alternatives for getting the car back in good running order? (it really is a nice car, just has a dead engine) Thanks.
