speedo/odo question 200 1983

ok, I read the archives on odo. repair, took my 85 mph unit apart, seems the purple gear spins freely on its shaft. When I turn the black spiral worm gear(lambda sond?), the odo registers, but turning just the purple gear, it doesn't work.Do i cut the worm gear off and glue the purple gear on? I read about scoring the shaft and NOT using glue on the purple gear. Can I put glue into the hole and put the gear on? Seems that would work... Any ideas? Last archives were from 1999, couldn't find and 7xx/9xx faqs. Your opinions please? TIA, Breadman
