I've got an adjustable box in my 1800e as well. I'd suspect they are playing with the coolant temp sensor instead of the intake air temp. The intake air temp has very little effect on the mixture, while the coolant temp sensor does - richening the mixture significantly for a cold engine (a sort of choke feature). The intake air temp richens the mixture very slightly to account for the very slightly greater density of cold air.

My 1800E is apparently a fairly early injected one - and it had a brian that was only used for about 6 months. In this guise the cold start valve is operated by the computer, not the simpler starter-thermal switch setup used later. When the brain konked out I was unable to find the proper early version, so I inseted opted for the adjustable box. That way on a cold start I can crank it up to +30% to make up for the inactive cold start valve. Still not great on cold mornings. I probably need to get a later model cold start valve (12V instead of 3V) and a thermoswitch - and wire up the later style connection.
