Brake booster disabled, fear quotient enabled... 1800 1962

* Did the added pressure required to stop the car all year long cause something to burst, hence the leak?

No. The booster just makes it easier to make the brakes work.

* I added a synthtic brake fluid I got at the gas station where the problem first arose; It was either that (it says "approoved for DOT 3 and DOT 4), or a DOT 3 fluid which I've heard is too corrosive and not recommended for Volvos. Is this synthetic stuff causing more problems?

Well, lets see. You have a 40year old car that may have 20 year old brake components. This is God's way of telling you it is time for new everything from the pedal to the wheels. Suck it up, bite the bullet, but don't drive the car anymore until you replace everything, including metal lines and hoses. Regular brake fluid is ok.

* Does anybody have any experience with rebuilding the booster?

Yes. There are shops around that can rebuild the booster for you. I suggest you check out the links on this list for a support group near you or one of the vendors. In addition you may want to try the group over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1800list/
