Dim headlights/CD player skips when blower is on 4...Electrical Gremlins... 200 1986

I seem to have some serious electrical gremlins these days. A while ago the wire from the alternator to the battery broke, so I replaced that and everything was fine for a while. Then it seemed that the headlights got progessively dimmer at night. Also, when I would start the car in the morning, leave it running for about 5 min and get in something strange would happen. The blower motor would seem to be running sluggishly even though it was on full, the radio would be lit up, but no display or music playing, and the dash lights would be dim. Once I stepped on the gas to bump the idle up a bit everything would be working properly. After a while this too started to go away. Last night I noticed driving home that when I turned the blower up to the highest setting the CD player display would go nuts and the music would skip. Does it sound like my CD alternator is giving up the ghost, or maybe the connection (I simply cut off the old, brittle end of the wire and attached a new lug) I made wasn't so good and isn't carrying enough current? How can I test my alternator to make sure it's putting out the proper voltage/amperage? I have a basic hand held tester that I haven't really used much, so I'm assuming this would be a good time to start.

Thanks,

Matthew
