Which Brakes? 200 1989

How do I determine which brakes I have? Bendix,Girling,A.T.E.-it's all confusing to me.Coming home last night the pedal goes almost to the floor and I hear a clunk from the rear brake. I replaced them in Spring(but they were cheapos)and was getting ready to replace the front ones which are thin.I know the back ones had tapered pins. Do the front too? And what kind are they? When I called the parts store, the counter guy asked me all these questions and I didn't know what to tell him! It's an '89 240DL,if that matters. Thanks bricksters.
