replaced stereo problem 700 1987

Just replaced my stereo in my 740. The amp had lost one channel and the radio just didn't work well. I have an apple Ipod mp3 player so i looked around for a unit that i could plug my ipod into with a mini stereo jack. I found an aiwa on ebay and bought it for $17.

I installed it last week and almost everything is great.

I could not find the definitive information about how to wire the radio wires to the cars wires that went to the old unit.

As i said everything works except the radio only works when my headlights (or parking lights) are on. Anyone have any idea what this might be. I don't recall exactly which wires i wire to what, but i tried several combinations and this was the only way that i could get it to work. I recall that i had one wire on the constact power wire and had to put two together (from the car) to the switched power in the aiwa unit.
