Bought 94 940/ rear speakers shot/ Amp needed? 900 1994

The speakers in a 940 I just got are all shot. I read previous archives about replacing them. My questions is: does the head unit (I have the CR-718) have enough power to push newer better 6X9s in the rear deck? Or will I need to add an amp to get better sound. Or maybe there is a stock amp I haven't found yet? This is a work car and I am not interested in an Awesome sound system (I have that in my dobly surround sounded V-70), and I would rather not replace the stock head unit. I have heard heard that buying great speakers with poor power sounds worse. Triax verses Coax etc.? Any other considerations?
Thanks, Tom
