I have been looking for a car for my 17 year old son. This is a 95 944T from outside the DC area. After a short test drive, upon returning the car to the dealer's parking, lot, I heard muffled knocking noise from the engine, maybe even with the RPM, while in the drivers seat at about 10 MPH. In park with the hood open, from idle to about 2000 RPM I could barely hear it. The noise primarily developed while the engine was under load, at low RPM. **This is the one thing that bothers me.** I cannot walk away from the car very easily because I can get it off the lot for 5k including tax and "dock fee".
The dealer allowed someone to test drive the car for 10 days in Dec. Evidence of that is in the glove box. Ten days, that is strange.
Passenger side head light was loose so that it could pivot horizontally about 15 deg. Both head lights looked kind of new and the turn signal lenses were old looking with the fine cracks. New looking front and rear bumper covers. All the front end paint looked normally aged along with the sun bleached grill along the top edge which rules out serious front end damage. Cowling around the steering wheel was loose and the air bag steering wheel trim was "off" a little. The dealer only had the valet key. Couldn't get into the trunk.
The car had the donut spare on the right front so it pulled hard to the right during the test drive. Other wise power seemed good. Fluids all looked good. Engine bay was not cleaned. No evidence of leaks but the oil filler cap wanted to jump off during the "jiggle" test. New looking turbo hose.
The dealer agreed to get a tire, not hub cap (it may be in the trunk), fix the head light (super glue works wonders), get a master key, and allow me to get the car checked by an outside mechanic. The carfax report is clean, one owner.
