Overdrive wiring 700 1985

So I had my '85 740 in for a clutch replacement on Friday. It definitely needed the clutch, there was about .5mm wear left on the clutch plate.

However, when I got it back, the overdrive wasn't working. I took it back to the clutch shop, and they looked it over with me, and it appears that the wiring harness on the transmission suffers the typical Volvo insulation disintegration.

So, now I need to replace the wiring down there (I hope that's all that's wrong with it.) Talked to the dealer, new wiring harness costs $110. Ouch.

Has anyone replaced this harness before? Has anyone replaced this harness with individual wires before? I'm thinking about going that route, $110 is a little much at this point. Seems to me all I have to do is find where the wire goes from disintegrating insulation to good insulation and splice in a new wire.

Any tips?
